Yoga for Kids

Yoga for Kids

Yoga (meaning union or yoke) is the practice of accessing and integrating all aspects of our true nature -- body, mind, and spirit -- in the pursuit of inner harmony.

Children in today’s modern world lead fast passed lives and it is not long before they experience pressures to keep up. They are often faced with emotional, social and physical challenges. Yoga provides breathing techniques and behavioural guidelines to build resilience, giving them tools and strategies when they need it most.

Yoga can be done anywhere. There is no need for a mat, fancy clothing, shoes, or equipment. It is a great physical activity for children who shy away from competitive team sports and a fantastic enhancement for those who are drawn to athletic endeavours. Children’s yoga classes involve play and focus without judgment, you cannot be wrong.

Yoga postures do encourage perseverance, strength, stamina and patience. It doesn’t matter whether you achieve the posture it’s the participation that synchronises breath, mind and body that counts. However, over time children will gain challenging postures, thus boosting self-esteem and confidence. Yoga teaches the children to be patient and continue working towards their goals. Whilst, developing focus children gain greater concentration and learn to clear their minds. Many studies have demonstrated how yoga improves children’s academic results and general wellbeing.

In addition, yoga classes give children mindfulness tools, encourage generosity, build physical strength and flexibility, inspire gratitude and self-discipline. They incorporate cornerstone values like non harming, non-stealing, cleanliness, truthfulness, moderation, self-regulation and self-discovery.

Children can take these skills anywhere. They can refer to breathing techniques and meditation to help solve problems, reduce anxiety, reduce insomnia, encourage creativity and inquisitiveness. Physical postures will not only improve coordination, fine motor skills, strength and flexibility but act as a release valve for many children to just get out their excess energy.

There is a reason why yoga teachings have been around for so long and why they are becoming more accessible and popular in today’s society. It’s time for all children to balance their energy, boost their health and savour the benefits of being still through yoga.
